Dexter, Season 7 In Review

Alright, I’m not wasting any time with this one. SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!

Doakes is here to warn you of all the surprises ahead. Tons of them. Do not read on if you don't want to hear the spoilers.

Remember that crap about Isaak Sirko and his gay boyfriend that Dexter cut into pieces and threw into the bay? What about Quinn’s Slavic girlfriend who whipped her tits out for a living? Maybe you recall other stuff about the Koshka Brotherhood, right?

Yeah, this one. Forget all about her.

Yeah, this one. Forget all about her.

Forget all of that. Every single bit. It’s no longer important.

And before I get too much farther into this review, let me say this: if they had kept with that storyline for the whole season, it would have been worse than the one with Lumen (Julia Styles), but thank god that wasn’t the case.

The last two or three episodes of this season have been the important ones, and it took me until now to realize it. The first ¾ of the season was simply filler, giving LaGuerta enough time to get super suspicious about Dexter. That’s all the purpose the first 9 episodes served.

But the last few have shown everyone at various states of unraveling. LaGuerta has been going crazy trying to prove Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter and Hannah have been drifting apart, especially since Hannah poisoned Deb and Dexter get her thrown into jail. Deb is being crushed under the weight of Dexter’s lies that she’s been covering up.

And Dexter is just completely losing his shit. That’s the most important thing we get from this season.

Not that Hannah McKay is out of prison. Not that LaGuerta is closing in on Dexter and actually has him arrested, but he walks because he made it look like she was trying to frame him.

Dexter tries to kill LaGuerta to keep her off his trail.

Seriously. He finds Hector Estrada and ties him down to a table in the shipping container in which he saw his mother murdered. Then, Dexter forces him to call LaGuerta to the container before he finishes Estrada off. Dexter knocks LaGuerta off, planning on using her gun to “kill” Estrada and using Estrada’s gun to kill LaGuerta, making it look like a simple double homicide.

But Deb busts in and wastes enough time for LaGuerta to wake up. She has to make the decision between killing Dexter and killing LaGuerta, and would you like to take a stab (pun intended) at who she saves?

"Ding, dong, the witch is dead..."

“Ding, dong, the witch is dead…”

Yes, indeed. Deb blows a hole in LaGuerta’s chest to save Dexter, and they walk out of there and into Batista’s New Years Party like nothing happened, something Dexter has mastered and Deb is starting to get really good at.

It’s not really a solid set up for next season like the last season provided, but all-in-all, the last few episodes weren’t extra “too little, too late.” The first majority of this season did drag, and it was really hard for me to maintain interest, but I’ve been there since the beginning, and I’m going to see this one through to the end.

Which, if I am understanding my Internet rumors correctly, is next season. One more to go, Dexter. Keep your knives sharp and your mind sharper. There’s still a bit of work to be done.
