Things are pretty slow around Let Us Nerd HQ these days. As Christmas slowly makes it’s way into our hearts and homes, things tend to slow down for a moment. This gives us some time to kick back and enjoy the holiday. Maybe it’ll award us the time to catch up on Doctor Who or create new worlds in Minecraft. And, that’s what we hope you will be doing all of today and tomorrow. Well, unless you’re that last minute shopper.
But, we got to thinking that maybe we all could set a few minutes aside to send off come Christmas love to those who really need it. I’m sure that you’ve heard of the horrible shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut a little more than a week ago. That town is hurting right now and in need of some kind words to get them through this tough time.
What I’m asking you to do is very simple. Why not sit down and write a short letter, letting the families know that you are thinking about them this holiday season and that they aren’t alone in their heartache. We as nerds have a special duty to stand up for and to show love to children, because it was when we were children that we began to like the things we geek out about today. There were kids in that school who were just like we were when we were their age. And, there were kids in that school that are just like our children that we are raising today, if you have kids that is.
So, let us send some love up the coast to families in need and to those children who survived the shooting, to let them know that everything will be okay, and that they have the love of the entire world to back them up whenever they feel down. Isn’t this what Christmas is about? Let us spread the love.
You can send your letters of love to:
The Families of Newtown
P.O. Box 3700
Newtown, Connecticut, 06470
If you’d like to make a monetary donation, you can donate to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund, a fund set up by the United Way that aims to help support the families and community devastated by this senseless act. All the proceeds from your donation goes directly to the families and the community. Or, you can donate to the Red Cross, which has been there aiding families in need.
Thanks for your time, and have a Merry Christmas.
