As of right now, Wedge Antilles, Rebel hotshot and Galactic Civil War hero, will not be returning to the big screen anytime soon. Denis Lawson, the actor who played Wedge in Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi spoke little about it recently during a screening of his new film, The Machine, when he said that he was asked to return for the upcoming film, but that the role “… just would have bored me.”
Although it wasn’t clear what Wedge’s role would have been in the new film, his role as commander of many X-Wing squadrons, including the famed Rogue Squadron, is well documented in the now non-canonical Expanded Universe. Lawson himself even voiced his character in the 2001 game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II – Rogue Leader. So, it was possibly in pulling from written material when the idea of including Wedge happened, given his importance and fan following. Since Lawson declined to return, it’s unclear if his character will be recast or just written out of the script altogether. But, I’m sure some diehard Star Wars fans will dig up that dirt soon enough.
Do you think Wedge should be recast for the new film?
